We've been really loving diary-style middle-grade books lately and the Glam and Beardy series, written by Ruby Clyde and Rachel WD and illustrated throughout by the brilliant Vincent Batignole, is no exception.
The books are all written through the point of view of Glam, a ten-year-old who lives in the ancient five Kingdoms of Kin Isle. In this world, when you turn ten you are meant to meet your Familiar. Your Familiar then guides you to the Kindom you belong to, and usually that is your happily ever after. But Glam's story is a little different, and her she chronicles all the good, the bad and the absolutely bonkers of her wild adventures in this realm in her diary (together with Beardy who just WON'T stop writing in it too!).
This series has it all: illustrations, humour, adventure, and it's perfect for fans of Loki: A Bad God's Guide, Diary of an Accidental Witch and Frostheart. For more books like this, check out our list of Best Illustrated Fiction Series for 9 and 10 year olds.
