The Way I Used to Be by Amber Smith is a coming-of-age series for teen readers that tackles themes of healing, mental health, trauma and hope. While the books have garnered so much success, we do recommend readers check the trigger warnings before diving in, and we avoid reading this if rape and assault are triggering subjects.
Throughout the books we meet a young Eden, whose life has been changed forever following a traumatic event in her life. We join her journey of healing and self-discovery over the course of her four years of high school, during which she copes with the trauma, sadness, confusion and anger of what has happened to her. She also meets Josh, who she will see again after high school, where the two, both struggling with their own challenges, never had a fair shot at a healthy relationship. As their relationship unfolds, the big question is: Can their love withstand the chaos of college life and the crushing realities of a trial that will determine whether Eden gets the justice she deserves?
We highly recommend this series for fans of If He Had Been with Me or Girl in Pieces. If you enjoyed reading this series and would like to read more books that tackle with topics of love, family and school, check out our blog post on the Best Family and School Life Books for Teens.
