Book of Dust Series

His Dark Materials is widely regarded as a modern classic, having sold millions of copies across the world, been translated into more than 40 languages, and, most recently, been adapted into a critically acclaimed BBC drama.

Philip Pullman’s Book of Dust trilogy returns to the world of His Dark Materials and continues the story of Lyra Silvertongue’s search for “Dust” and the downfall of the Magisterium.

Pullman describes the series as not a prequel or a sequel but an “equel” as it follows events before, during and after His Dark Materials. The books can be read on their own, but we recommend starting with Northern Lights and reading the works in order.

The Book of Dust series follows Lyra’s story at different points in her life. The first book, La Belle Sauvagerecounts events that happened eleven years before Northern Lights when Lyra was a baby and the second, The Secret Commonwealth, picks up the story when Lyra is a young adult studying at St Sophia’s College in Oxford. This book contains some adult themes and so is recommended for adults and confident readers 13+.

Philip Pullman’s books are not only gripping adventures, but also raise thought-provoking questions about consciousness, growing-up and power in our society.
