We think this series is perfect for readers aged 9+ who love magic but also enjoy a pinch of mystery in their stories, written by the fantastic and imaginative Nicki Thornton.

The books narrate Seth's story: he starts off as the downtrodden kitchen boy at the remote Last Chance Hotel, owned by the nasty Bunn family. But when a strange gathering of magicians arrives for dinner, a guest is poisoned by Seth's special dessert. A locked-room murder investigation ensues, and Seth must find out who did it to save himself from being blamed for the murder. In the process, he discovers that there may be more to the world of magic he is part of... And ultimately, there will be more mysteries to solve. 

The books mix the classic crime and mystery tropes with magic, creating a fantastic Agatha Christie meets Harry Potter mash-up.
