Classics Illustrated Series

Classic Comics Illustrated is a series of graphic novels, which retell some of the great literary masterpieces in comic strip form. The first book, The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas, was published back in 1941 and since then over 200 classic stories have been released all over the world.

These colourful, comic strip versions of some of the world’s most popular stories proved a great way to engage young readers with the world of literature and, in 2008, Classic Comic Store adapted the stories for a more modern audience. Keeping the books’ gorgeous illustrations and vintage feel, they tailored the stories specifically to engage and educate young readers, with the aim of introducing them to the world’s greatest stories from the world’s greatest authors.

Discovering the classics can unlock a whole new world and these graphic novels are an ideal stepping stone to the world of literature. The graphic novel format is very engaging, particularly for emerging or reluctant readers, and comics for kids are gaining in popularity thanks to bestselling series such as Captain Underpants.

The Comics Illustrated stories are enhanced by notes, including theme discussions and study questions to use at home or in the classrooms, as well as author biographies and timelines to provide historical context.

The series tackles classics for every taste, whether you prefer horror (Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde), mysteries (Sherlock Holmes), science fiction (The War of the Worlds) or simply want to get better acquainted with essentials like Hamlet or Wuthering Heights.  We love this series as it helps young people see the classics, not just as dry texts that have to be studied at school, but as the gripping stories that made them classics in the first place.

Some stories, like Treasure Island, Alice in Wonderland, Oliver Twist or The Jungle Book, will be familiar to many young readers but there are also lesser-known classics that risk languishing in obscurity such as Moby Dick or The Iliad.

The best stories are timeless, and this is a great way to discover them.

You can also check out more of our favourite graphic novels for kids on our blog.
