The Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead is one of our favourite YA series because it’s got romance, fantasy, a school setting and, of course, vampires. The series is so successful it’s expanded into a spin-off book series, and is also now a TV series available to stream on Amazon Prime and Netflix.
These books are a unique take on the myth of the vampire. In this world, you are either a mortal vampire, also called a Moroi, or an eternal vampire, called Strigoi. The main difference? The Strigoi are evil and feed on innocent people to survive.
Lissa Dragomir, a Moroi vampire, has sworn to look after her best friend, Rose Hathaway, and throughout the series, the two friends must learn to protect each other in this dangerous world where Strigoi are just around the corner, ready to pounce.
While escaping dangerous vampires, surviving Strigoi attacks and, sometimes, breaking the law, our main characters go to school, Vladimir’s Academy, and even fall in love, which, as is to be expected, can complicate things quite a bit.
Richelle Mead is also the author of The Glittering Court books and Soundless.
We recommend this series to all fans of The Vampire Diaries, Fallen books, The Mortal Instruments and the Twilight Saga.
