The Northern Lights and His Dark Materials award-winning author Philip Pullman has also penned an unputtdownable female-led series of detective novels for young adults set in Victorian London: the Sally Lockhart quartet. 

The books centre around Sally Lockhart, who is sixteen at the beginning of the series, but grows into adulthood by the end of the quartet. In each book, Sally is on the go: Victorian London is full of secrets, and she's the only one who can uncover them with her detective skills and financial knowledge. 

Mystery seems to creep into each aspect of Sally's life, and it all starts with her father suddenly drowning. His tragic death plunges her on a journey like no other. Action and drama await as Sally claws her way to the truth, wherever it ends up taking her.

Sally is also a savvy businesswoman: she owns a financial consultancy and this is exactly what brings her onto her second mystery to solve. As she investigates the losses of a client that just don't seem to add up, she uncovers the nasty business of Victorian London's high-society.

And in the third and fourth titles, things get even more complicated as Sally grows into womanhood, falls in love and even has a child of her own. 

Readers will love the intricate plot twists and overarching story of a modern woman surrounded by a society of powerful men. If you're a fan of cosy mysteries, and are looking for something to step up from Agatha Oddly, Murder Most Unladylike Mystery series or Montgomery Bonbon, you will undoubtably have fun joining in on Sally's exciting adventures!
