The City of Ember books by Jeanne duPrau are exciting middle-grade thrillers, set in a post-apocalyptic world. First published in 2003, the books were brought to life in the 2008 film starring Bill Murray and Saiorse Ronan.

The Books of Ember begin with the groundbreaking first novel The City of Ember – the story of a girl, a boy and their underground city.

The city of Ember was created as a last refuge for the human race. But hundreds of years on, crops are blighted, the stores have almost run dry, corruption is spreading and the lights are failing. When two children, Lina and Doon, discover fragments of an ancient parchment, they begin to wonder if there could be a way out of Ember. Can they decipher the words from long ago and find a new future for everyone? 

The City of Ember series is a trilogy, concluding with The Diamond of Darkhold. We recommend starting with book one and reading them in order, finishing with the prequel The Prophet of Yonwood. There is also a great City of Ember graphic novel.

These books are about hope and friendship, and are brilliant for readers 8+ who love a mystery.
