In addition to his books on changes in the U.S. zoos and the gorillas' struggle fort survival, Nichols co-authored a book on chimps with Jane Goodall. He has been featured in Rolling Stone, American Photographer, and many other magazines. He has also been named Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year and has been honoured by World Press Photo, among others.
