A big part of keeping readers aged 5 and 6 engaged while transitioning into independent reading is finding characters they love and want to come back to time and time again.
Through animal characters, writers have been able to convey important messages of inclusion, love and empathy since the beginning of time. Their stories work as a metaphor for some of the complex questions we ask ourselves, and they help to make sense of the world we live in.
Animal characters can also be reminiscent of those characters our little ones have loved since they were babies, offering an easier progression towards older books.
